John3:16-18 tells us of God’s the Fathers great love for us that He chose to send His own Son to rescue us from our fallen, sinful ways and, to provide a way for us to approach and enter into the presence of a holy God. This is only possible through the cleansing work of Christ Jesus.
Jesus says of Himself in John 3:16 that “whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
This presents us with a very important question – who is this Jesus in whom we are to believe? We need to get this right.
There are several creeds and confessions which give us a concise definition of who Christ is. The Baptist Faith and Message define Jesus, the Son of God this way:
Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ, He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever-present Lord.
For this creed to be meaningful there needs to be a biblical basis for each of the statements. Each of the twenty-three separate phrases in this statement of faith are broken down and the scripture that supports each of those assertions appears below. These help us to dig a little deeper into God’s word as it reveals who Jesus is, His mission, His obedience and His character.
1) “Christ is the eternal Son of God.”

2) “In His incarnation as Jesus Christ…”

10) “He honored the divine law by His personal obedience…”
1 Peter 2:21-25
(22-23) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
11) “…and in His substitutionary death on the cross…”
Isaiah 53; 1 Peter 2:21-25
(25) He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
